Leaders of both chambers of the United States Congress have agreed on a bill regarding the US defense budget for the next two years. The text of the bill has been made publicly available.
Details of the Defense Budget and Assistance to Ukraine
The document includes an expanded section on “Expansion and Modification of the Defense Assistance Initiative for Ukraine.” According to it, $400 billion is allocated for 2026 and another $400 billion for 2027 to support Ukraine. Thus, the total funding for assistance to Kyiv over the two years will reach $800 billion.
The US defense budget for 2026, according to the bill, will amount to $901 billion. It is worth noting that the previous requirement from former President Donald Trump called for a budget of $892.6 billion.
The bill also includes an assessment of “the military strategy, objectives, and deployment of Russian forces that affect countries in the Indo-Pacific region,” particularly China.
International Context and Possible Voting
In addition to supporting Ukraine, the bill proposes to prepare an analytical description of the scale of cooperation between China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea in the areas of diplomacy, information, military, and economic interaction. This will allow the US to analyze potential challenges on the international stage more deeply, especially in the Indo-Pacific region.
The US House of Representatives is expected to consider the defense budget bill (NDAA) in the coming days. Meanwhile, according to international media, in November 2024, the US proposed a preliminary draft peace agreement that included a partial reduction of American military assistance to Ukraine, which is critically important for countering Russian aggression.
