President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the importance of maintaining the independence of anti-corruption bodies in Ukraine following her conversation with President Volodymyr Zelensky, which took place on July 27. She described this discussion as a “good conversation” and highlighted Ukraine’s significant achievements on its path to European integration.

Anti-Corruption Reform and EU Support

According to Ursula von der Leyen, Ukraine’s further progress towards European Union membership must be based on solid foundations, among which the independence of anti-corruption bodies holds a key place. She noted that effective action against corruption is fundamental to the rule of law in the country, and the EU will continue to support Ukraine in this process.

“Ukraine has already achieved a lot on its European path. This must be built on solid foundations and maintain independent anti-corruption bodies, which are the cornerstone of the rule of law in Ukraine. Ukraine can count on our support in making progress on its European path.”

Legislative Initiatives and Next Steps

Volodymyr Zelensky reported that he has signed laws regarding the reform of the National Agency of Ukraine for Detection, Investigation and Management of Assets Obtained from Corruption and Other Crimes (ARMA), as well as regarding factoring. These legislative acts are part of the conditions for receiving financial assistance from the European Union under the Ukraine Facility program.

Additionally, according to the President of Ukraine, the conversation with Ursula von der Leyen included discussions on a draft law aimed at ensuring the independence and effectiveness of Ukrainian anti-corruption bodies. This indicates further steps by Ukraine in implementing European standards in the fight against corruption and strengthening the rule of law.
