This weekend, the European Commission plans to hold important consultations with EU member states regarding the preparation of the 18th sanctions package against Russia. This will be another step in increasing economic pressure on the Russian Federation in response to its actions in Ukraine. During these meetings, known as “confessional meetings,” new restrictions and measures aimed at strengthening the EU’s sanctions policy will be discussed.

It is noted that earlier, on May 20, the European Union adopted the 17th sanctions package, which targeted nearly 200 shadow fleet vessels, hybrid threats from Russia, and human rights violations. The main goal of these measures is to reduce Russia’s financial and military potential and to compel the country to abandon its aggression.
Reaction and Further Steps by the EU
The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, emphasized that the new sanctions package will have an even more powerful effect in the coming months. He stated:
“The 18th package is being prepared with further strict sanctions. It is time to increase pressure on Russia to achieve a ceasefire.”
Following the adoption of the 17th package, EU leaders are actively coordinating their actions with Ukraine. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reported on a conversation with the President of Ukraine and emphasized that the bloc is “closely coordinating” further steps with Kyiv. According to her, a new, 18th sanctions package is being prepared, which includes even stricter restrictions for Russia in its fight against its aggression.
