“Work is currently underway, but the plan is to gradually phase out Russian fossil fuels, so we will consider comprehensive plans that we will present in the coming weeks,” Itkonen said.
According to information from the Financial Times, the European Union is actively exploring the possibility of terminating long-term gas contracts with Russia. To avoid potential penalties, the EU plans to invoke the ‘force majeure’ clause, sources from the FT report.
During the full-scale war, European countries significantly reduced their purchases of pipeline gas from Russia, and currently, its share in European imports is only 11%. At the same time, imports of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) have increased, and the European Union is seeking opportunities to buy more LNG from the United States to enhance transatlantic trade relations.
