In Lviv, large-scale international events and the signing of documents to establish a special tribunal took place on Europe Day

On May 9 in Lviv, on Europe Day, significant international events occurred, with 35 delegations from European Union countries and other states arriving in the city. The Mayor of Lviv, Andriy Sadovyi, announced that a “Ukraine-EU” meeting took place at the City Hall with the participation of foreign ministers from all European countries. The main topics of discussion were new sanctions against Russia, defense support issues, and Ukraine’s path to European integration.

In Rynok Square, the EU flag was ceremoniously raised, symbolizing the country’s European integration. According to Sadovyi, this was done by children who have experienced the war: Yana Stepanenko, who lost her legs due to a missile strike, and Markiyan Mazur, a winner of international Olympiads. The mayor also reported that an important meeting of the foreign ministers of EU countries and the High Representative for Security and Foreign Policy, Kaia Kallas, took place in Lviv.

Two important events in Lviv: the Foreign Ministers’ meeting and the establishment of a Special Tribunal

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha announced two key events in Lviv while welcoming delegations from the European Union. The first was a meeting of the foreign ministers of EU countries, and the second was a Core Group meeting regarding the establishment of a Special Tribunal to address Russia’s act of aggression against Ukraine. He emphasized that during this visit, Ukrainian and European officials paid tribute to Ukrainian heroes who defended the country from aggression, particularly at the Lychakiv Cemetery.

According to Sybiha, discussions during the visit focused on further joint efforts to strengthen Ukraine, pressure on Russia, and advancing its EU membership. It is also known that on May 9, documents regarding the establishment of the Special Tribunal are to be signed in Lviv, marking a historic milestone in the fight against Russian aggression. Draft documents were made available to Radio Free Europe on May 6 and confirm the intentions of the international community.

The European Commission announced back in February that legal experts and representatives from the EU, Ukraine, and 37 other countries laid the legal foundations for the establishment of this tribunal. President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed gratitude in December 2024 to all states and officials supporting this initiative. He emphasized that the issue of creating a truly effective tribunal remains relevant, and much work lies ahead to achieve effective justice for Russia’s act of aggression against Ukraine.
