Winston Peters commented on the decision to direct funding, emphasizing the importance of Ukraine’s defense not only for European security but also for the stability of the Indo-Pacific region. The minister highlighted the joint actions of New Zealand and Australia under the Priority Needs List for Ukraine (PURL) to strengthen the country’s defense capabilities. The government states that supporting Ukraine’s defense capabilities is one of its main priorities while international efforts for a peaceful resolution continue.
Use of Funds and NATO Statement
Judith Collins expressed solidarity with Ukraine, which has been forced to defend itself against Russian aggression for the fourth consecutive year. The minister noted that the Armed Forces of Ukraine face challenging tasks in protecting cities and civilians from ongoing drone attacks.
“The challenge for the Armed Forces of Ukraine in defending their cities and their people remains enormous in the face of constant and relentless bombardments of Ukraine by Russian drones,” she added.
The Government of New Zealand clarified that the funding under PURL will be used exclusively for the purchase of weapons and equipment that comply with international agreements and the country’s domestic policies.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte noted the involvement of New Zealand and Australia in the program for purchasing American weapons for Ukraine. He called it “great news” and emphasized that even countries outside the Alliance support Ukraine in its struggle.
