Details of the New Aid Package
According to Støre, these funds will be directed towards purchasing gas for Ukraine for the winter period. The additional support package is about 100 million dollars and is part of the expanded assistance under the Nansen program for Ukraine. Norwegian authorities emphasize that dialogue with the Ukrainian side allows for support that best meets the country’s actual needs.
“Norway’s support for Ukraine is strong and ongoing. It is extremely important to maintain close dialogue with the Ukrainian authorities to ensure that the support meets Ukraine’s needs,” said the Norwegian Prime Minister.
Overall Support and Prospects for Cooperation
The financial aid for gas purchases that Norway has been providing to Ukraine since 2022 has already reached a total of 6.1 billion Norwegian kroner. The new tranche will be a significant contribution to Ukraine’s energy security amid ongoing attacks from the Russian Federation.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the Norwegian people for their support, emphasizing the importance of continuous assistance for the protection of Ukrainian lives. During the talks, the parties also discussed the continuation of support in 2026.
The meeting between Zelensky and Støre took place at Gardermoen Airport due to the limited time in the Ukrainian president’s schedule during his European tour. The next meeting of the leaders is scheduled for the EU summit in Brussels, which will take place on October 23-24.
The Nansen program, under which assistance is provided, was launched in Norway in February 2023. In November 2024, Norwegian political parties agreed to extend the program until 2030 to ensure long-term support for Ukraine in the energy sector.
