President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky officially signed a decree appointing Olha Reshetylova (Kobylynska) as the military ombudsman. This is evidenced by a document published by the President’s Office in October.

For the First Time in History: Establishment of the Military Ombudsman Institution

Olha Reshetylova has become the first military ombudsman in the history of our country. Prior to this, Zelensky dismissed her from her previous position as the President’s Commissioner for the Protection of the Rights of Servicemen and Their Families.

The President’s Office reported that work is currently underway to establish the Office of the Military Ombudsman. According to the explanation, this body will operate as an auxiliary to the president, ensuring oversight of the rights of representatives of the Defense Forces. This includes active military personnel, community volunteers, reservists, participants in the resistance movement in temporarily occupied territories, and law enforcement officers directly involved in combat operations.

Tasks and Powers of the Military Ombudsman

The military ombudsman will have the authority to review complaints, address issues arising during service, and initiate inspections and prepare relevant decisions.

“The main priority now is the launch of the Office of the Military Ombudsman. At this time, it is also important not to lose momentum in processing and responding to the appeals and complaints of servicemen,” Reshetylova stated in a comment.

The decree to establish the Office of the Military Ombudsman was signed by the president back in September. It is expected that the new institution will significantly enhance the protection of military rights and ensure effective public oversight of the country’s security forces.
