The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, has officially appointed Olha Stefanishyna, the former Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, as the new head of the Ukrainian Embassy in the United States of America. The relevant decree was signed on August 27, as announced by the head of state in an evening address.

Key Objectives of the New Diplomatic Mission
Zelensky emphasized that Stefanishyna faces strategic tasks aimed at renewing the activities of the Ukrainian embassy in Washington. Special attention is given to the necessity of fully implementing the agreements reached with the American side, particularly in the defense sector. The President stressed that the long-term security of Ukraine largely depends on fruitful relations with the USA. Among the priorities are the supply of American weapons for Ukrainian needs and cooperation in modern technologies, including drones.
“The formal procedures are complete – today I signed the decree on the appointment of the ambassador. I have defined key tasks for renewing the work of our embassy, and most importantly – to fully implement all agreements with Washington – our agreements with President Trump, especially in the defense sector. Much depends on our relations with America for the long-term guarantee of Ukraine’s security,” the head of state emphasized, reminding that this concerns both the supply of American weapons for Ukraine and ‘modern drones for the United States’.
Change of Leadership of the Diplomatic Mission in Washington
Oksana Markarova, who led the Ukrainian embassy in the USA throughout the full-scale war, was recognized for her contribution and the challenging mission of representing Ukraine. At the same time, discussions about her replacement had been ongoing since the beginning of the new phase of the American administration. In particular, members of the Republican Party expressed dissatisfaction with Markarova’s role during the electoral campaign in the USA.
At the end of September, Speaker of the House of Representatives of the US Congress Mike Johnson, representing the Republican Party, demanded Markarova’s dismissal. This came after she organized President Zelensky’s visit to a munitions factory in Pennsylvania, where only representatives of the Democratic Party were present.
