Orban Conducts Survey of Hungarian Citizens on Ukraine’s EU Membership

The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban, announced on April 22 the start of a survey among the citizens of the country regarding their stance on Ukraine’s membership in the European Union. The photographs he released show a ballot asking whether Hungarians support Ukraine’s EU membership. This move is an attempt by the government to gauge public opinion on this important issue, considering the complex political situation.

As Orban stated, “

“Brussels and the ‘Tisza’ party support Ukraine’s EU membership. This will destroy the Hungarian economy. We will not allow them to decide our future over our heads! I have already voted”

.” Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto and other government members have long shown support for Moscow and closely cooperate with Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko.

Reactions and Consequences for Hungarian Politics

Previously, Hungary opposed Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, refusing to support a joint EU statement regarding the provision of arms to Ukraine during an urgent leaders’ meeting in Brussels. Later, Orban set forth a number of conditions for cooperation, including a ban on “unnatural child-rearing” and the deportation of “Soros agents.” Regarding Hungary’s position on Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky recently emphasized that this country is blocking Ukraine’s EU membership, which heightens tensions in the region.
