Poland Will Decide by the End of the Year on Participation in Funding Weapons for Ukraine under the PURL Program

The Polish government is conducting a detailed analysis of the possibility of financial participation in the PURL initiative, which involves the purchase of American weapons for Ukraine funded by NATO allies and their partners. A final decision on this matter is expected to be made by the end of the current year, taking into account the volumes of assistance already provided by Warsaw to Kyiv.

Poland’s Position on Supporting Ukraine

The Polish Ministry of Defense emphasized that the government is assessing its potential contribution, considering the balance among all existing programs supporting Ukraine in which Warsaw is involved. It was noted that Poland “maintains constant contact with Ukraine both at the bilateral level and within international support mechanisms… to ensure that our support aligns as closely as possible with Ukraine’s needs and is coordinated with assistance from others…”

“Poland is currently analyzing the possibilities for contribution, considering the balance among all support measures for Ukraine in which we participate. We expect to complete this process by the end of the year,” stated the Polish Ministry of Defense.

Polish officials highlighted their support for the PURL initiative, which allows for the rapid supply of critical American weapons directly from U.S. arsenals to Ukraine. At the same time, Warsaw reminded of the support already provided, including the supply of tanks, armored vehicles, and aircraft, which initiated broader international assistance to meet the urgent needs of the Ukrainian army. Today, Poland is focusing its efforts on training Ukrainian military personnel, providing material support that includes both lethal and non-lethal means, as well as logistical assistance.

Details of the PURL Initiative and NATO Countries’ Participation

The PURL initiative (Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List), established in July last year by agreement between the U.S. and NATO, involves financing the supply of American weapons to Ukraine at the expense of European states, with the process being coordinated by the Alliance itself. According to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, in the first months after the launch of PURL, over 2 billion euros were raised. These funds are directed towards the procurement of weapons and ammunition, including those not produced by European defense industry enterprises, such as air defense systems.

According to the latest data, 16 NATO member countries have joined the initiative, which constitutes half of all Alliance participants. However, France, the United Kingdom, Poland, Spain, and Italy have not yet become participants in the PURL program. A final decision regarding Poland’s participation in funding this initiative is expected by the end of the year.
