Support for Ukraine and Strengthening Security
According to the Foreign Minister, Romania’s contribution to the PURL initiative is aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities and ensuring stability in the region. The program is implemented under the guidance of the United States and is part of a broader support system that aligns with Romania’s commitments within NATO and its strategic partnership with the United States of America.
“Romania’s contribution to PURL will help achieve lasting peace in Ukraine by enhancing Ukraine’s capabilities. Romania’s participation in the PURL mechanism under U.S. leadership directly contributes to strengthening regional security and fully aligns with Romania’s commitments within NATO and its Strategic Partnership with the United States of America,” Călin added.
European Cooperation and Ukraine’s Needs
The Minister also emphasized that thanks to the coordinated efforts of Donald Trump, Volodymyr Zelensky, and European leaders, the recent meeting in the U.S. has provided a new impetus for achieving lasting peace. Romania, she stated, is actively participating in diplomatic dialogue at the European and Alliance levels, as well as in creating security guarantees for Ukraine and the entire region.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal has called on international partners to allocate at least 0.25% of GDP for Ukraine’s defense needs. He noted that the total need of the country for receiving PURL aid packages in 2026 is estimated at 15 billion dollars.
