The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Ruslan Stefanchuk, held a phone conversation with the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Mike Johnson. Stefanchuk announced this on July 24 on his social media accounts.

Strengthening Cooperation Between Ukraine and the U.S.

During the discussion, Stefanchuk thanked his counterpart for the “consistent support for Ukraine” and emphasized the importance of further expanding sanctions against the Russian Federation. The parliamentarians agreed to strengthen inter-parliamentary cooperation between the countries.

“I invited my colleague to personally visit Kyiv, and we also agreed to meet at the Parliamentary Summit of the G7 in Canada in September. Our partnership is strengthening, and our joint decisions are bringing peace and security to Europe and the world,” added the Speaker of the Rada.

Political Context in the U.S.

So far, Mike Johnson has not commented on the results of his conversation with Stefanchuk. It is worth noting that in 2024, Johnson sparked a wave of discontent among his Republican colleagues by initially delaying and then bringing to a vote a bill that proposed providing Ukraine with $61 billion in aid. This decision could have impacted his position as Speaker, as several Republicans were reluctant to support his candidacy during his re-election in January 2025, even with the backing of the elected President Donald Trump. Ultimately, Johnson was re-elected by a narrow margin of one vote. In February 2025, he stated that Republicans in the House of Representatives had no intention of initiating a new bill regarding support for Ukraine.
