The Russian Federation has decided to exclude the Ukrainian language and literature from the federal school curriculum. This information became known after the publication of the relevant document, which was highlighted by the Russian newspaper “Kommersant.” The explanatory note to the draft order of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation states that such changes are being implemented due to the “changed geopolitical situation in the world.”

What the New Order Entails
As a result, the current educational program will completely lose its validity. However, the cancellation of the federal program does not mean a complete abandonment of teaching the Ukrainian language. Schools will be able to use their own programs for this subject. Whether a new program for the Ukrainian language as a native language will be developed is not specified in the document.
Features of Teaching Ukrainian Language in the Regions
In the parts of the Zaporizhia and Kherson regions of Ukraine occupied by Russia, the Ukrainian language remains mandatory for teaching in schools. In other regions of the Russian Federation, this subject can be chosen by primary and secondary school students if their parents submit a corresponding application. As reported by “Kommersant,” apart from the annexed territories of Ukraine, such a choice has only been made in certain schools in Bashkortostan.
“The current program will completely lose its validity. This is being done due to the ‘changed geopolitical situation in the world,'” states the explanatory note to the draft order of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation.
