Sweden Calls on Europe to Intensify Military and Financial Support for Ukraine

Міністр оборони Швеції розповів про «неправильну траєкторію» в підтримці України

Swedish Defense Minister Paul Jonson confirmed his country’s commitment to further investments in the purchase of American weapons for Ukraine under the PURL initiative. The statement was made at NATO headquarters ahead of the meeting of Alliance defense ministers on October 15.

Sweden Strengthens Support for Ukraine and Calls for Joint Efforts

Stockholm has already allocated 250 million dollars, sharing the funding of a half-billion-dollar defense package with Denmark and Norway. Sweden expects more countries to join the initiative to expand support for Ukraine.

“There is currently a dialogue ongoing, particularly among the Nordic-Baltic countries. Another issue is the burden-sharing, which is critically important right now because we are observing a downward trajectory in support for Ukraine, which is continuously decreasing. We want to see more efforts to strengthen and increase financial support and military donations to Ukraine,” Jonson emphasized.

He highlighted that there is currently a decline in the level of assistance to Ukraine, making it necessary to intensify collective efforts.

Prospects for Transferring Fighter Jets and Further Assistance

Paul Jonson does not rule out the possibility of transferring Swedish Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine in the future. However, he noted potential difficulties that may arise from the simultaneous operation of different types of combat aircraft. Ukraine has already received American F-16s and French Mirages with the support of European partners.

The Swedish Defense Minister stated that “the air coalition advised us to wait on such measures (the transfer of Gripen – ed.).” However, there is interest from Ukraine in the new version of the Gripen fighter, Gripen Echo, and the Swedish side continues dialogue with Kyiv on this matter.

In September 2025, Sweden provided Ukraine with its next, 20th military aid package worth 836 million dollars. It included 18 modern Archer artillery systems. This continues the long-term support: in 2026-2027, Sweden plans to allocate 3.6 billion dollars annually to Ukraine for military purposes, and in 2026-2028, 900 million dollars for civilian funding.
