Military Assistance for Ukraine: Key Statements from Kaja Kallas
During a conversation with journalists, Kaja Kallas noted that Russia’s daily missile strikes on Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, result in loss of life. According to her, the EU must increase political and economic pressure on Russia, particularly by implementing new sanction packages. At the same time, she pointed out the importance of continuing to provide Ukraine with the necessary military support, including munitions.
“We must maintain pressure on Russia, which is why we are advancing the 18th sanctions package. We also need to provide military assistance to Ukraine. I am pleased to report that 80% of the munitions initiative has already been promised, but of course, we need to do more this year to deliver 2 million shells,” she stated.
Czech Initiative and Increase in Supply Volumes
In 2024, EU member states actively participated in projects for the procurement of munitions for Ukraine. In particular, in May 2024, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala announced plans to deliver 500,000 large-caliber munitions by the end of the year. Subsequently, participating countries continued this initiative into 2025.
According to Czech Defense Minister Jana Černochová, in 2024, as part of joint efforts, 1.5 million munitions have already been delivered to Ukraine, of which 500,000 are 155-millimeter rounds. Thus, the provision of military assistance is under constant monitoring by European partners, and the volumes of support are increasing.
