Key Areas of Cooperation and Signed Agreements
Merz emphasized that Kyiv and Berlin have signed a number of agreements for further cooperation. According to him, the interaction between the countries is of strategic importance not only for Ukraine but also for the security of Germany itself. He highlighted the unique experience of the Ukrainian army among European states, which enhances the effectiveness of joint efforts in the defense sector.
“Today we agreed on a new support package, primarily concerning air defense, long-range weapons, and ammunition,” he said during the joint briefing with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Expansion of Support and Prospects for the Defense Industry
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky clarified that ten bilateral documents have already been signed. Among them, agreements regarding the supply of missiles, the RAS-2 air defense system, and IRIS-T are particularly highlighted. Zelensky thanked the German side for their support and stressed the importance of further cooperation. He emphasized that the goal is to create conditions for the production of components critical to Europe’s defense directly on Ukrainian territory.
Zelensky’s visit to Berlin took place within the framework of Ukrainian-German intergovernmental consultations. This meeting is particularly significant in light of the suspension of peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, which was caused by the escalation of the situation in the Middle East.
Germany is currently the largest European donor to Ukraine in its confrontation with Russian aggression. Against the backdrop of reduced support from the United States under Donald Trump, Kyiv is seeking to strengthen its partnership with Berlin to ensure stable military assistance.
