New Sanctions Package and Ukraine’s Expectations
In his evening address, the head of state emphasized that the Ukrainian side, together with European partners, is already working on the twentieth package of restrictive measures. Ukraine proposes to include Russian legal and physical entities that profit from the export of energy resources, as well as to update the list of individuals involved in the abduction of Ukrainian children.
“We are preparing together with our partners in the European Union the twentieth sanctions package. We expect the content of this package to be prepared within a month, and we propose to add to the 20th EU sanctions package Russian legal and physical entities that are still profiting from energy resources, and there will also be an update on the abductors of Ukrainian children – there must be truly global pressure against this,” he said in his evening video address.
Increasing Pressure on the Russian Military-Industrial Complex
The president emphasized the need to enhance the effectiveness of sanctions, particularly regarding schemes that allow Russian military production to obtain foreign components. Zelensky stressed that parts from other countries are used in the production of Russian missiles and drones, so strengthening control over their supply is one of the key tasks for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
In October, the European Union finalized the nineteenth sanctions package, which includes energy, financial, and trade restrictions aimed at the main sources of income for Russia. In particular, a gradual ban on the import of liquefied natural gas is being introduced: for short-term contracts – in six months, for long-term contracts – from January 1, 2027.
After the Russian Federation’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the United States and other Western countries imposed a series of sanctions to limit Moscow’s access to Western technologies and reduce its military potential. However, despite these restrictions, Russia continues to find ways to circumvent sanctions and obtain foreign components for weapons.
