“Our goal is clear: to provide strong security guarantees for Ukraine.”
European Guarantees for Ukraine
Ursula von der Leyen clarified that security guarantees for Ukraine should include the establishment of a powerful Ukrainian army capable of resisting potential future attacks. It also involves the formation of multinational deterrent forces and the responsibilities of partners to support Ukraine in the event of renewed aggression from the Russian Federation.
She stressed that Ukraine’s accession to the European Union will not only be a self-sufficient security guarantee but also an important component of the European proposal for the country’s prosperity and transformation.
Coordination of International Support
On January 6, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Paris, where the meeting of the leaders of the “Coalition of the Willing” — countries providing support to Ukraine in its war against the Russian Federation — is taking place. European officials report that following recent meetings of national security advisors and military planners, a renewed sense of urgency has emerged regarding assistance to Ukraine. They hope that the Paris meeting will facilitate coordination of actions between the United States, Ukraine, and other European countries to develop a unified approach to security guarantees.
