Budapest’s Position on Meeting with the Ukrainian Leader
In his interview, the diplomat emphasized that Peter Madyar clearly stated at a press conference his readiness to engage in dialogue with the Ukrainian president. According to Shandor, both sides are currently awaiting the completion of the electoral process and the inauguration procedures in Hungary, after which there will be an opportunity for official contacts between the two countries.
“At the press conference, he clearly said: of course, we will meet with the President of Ukraine. So we are waiting for the inauguration moments and the end of the electoral process.”
When asked whether an official request had already been received from Ukraine regarding the organization of the meeting, the ambassador noted that this issue is not yet timely, as the election results in the country have not been officially announced. He added that Ukraine will act according to diplomatic protocol when the appropriate moment arises.
Political Signals from the New Hungarian Leader
Peter Madyar, who leads the “Tisa” party and won the parliamentary elections, previously expressed his openness to meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky. According to the new prime minister, he plans to lift the veto imposed by the previous head of government, Viktor Orban, on the allocation of a €90 billion loan to Ukraine. At the same time, Madyar emphasized that Hungary will not bear financial obligations for this loan and is opposed to the accelerated accession of Ukraine to the European Union.
Madyar also stated that the normalization of relations with Kyiv is possible only if the rights of the Hungarian national minority in Ukraine are respected.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed his readiness to meet with the new Prime Minister of Hungary, which could be an important step for the development of bilateral relations.
