The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine firmly rejected the statements of the Hungarian authorities regarding mobilization in Ukraine, particularly in the case of the death of a mobilized Transcarpathian of Hungarian descent. The ministry emphasized that the Hungarian side’s statement is manipulative and distorts the real circumstances, playing into the hands of Russian propaganda.

Position of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry and the Course of Events

Spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Georgiy Tikhiy, noted that the official statement from Budapest does not mention Russia, creating a false impression regarding the reasons for the mobilization of citizens. He stressed that the mobilization in Ukraine is caused by Russian aggression, and omitting this is illogical and absurd.

“The statements from the Hungarian leadership regarding mobilization in Ukraine are manipulative. They completely distort the real situation and play into Russia’s propaganda,” said spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Georgiy Tikhiy.

The Ministry added that in the context of the constant threat from Russia, all citizens of Ukraine, including representatives of the Hungarian national minority, are compelled to defend their homes, families, and state sovereignty. Any attempts to use individual cases for political purposes, according to Tikhiy, only harm relations between Ukraine and Hungary and create unnecessary tension.

The Ministry called on the official Budapest to refrain from further manipulations and, if there are genuine concerns about the fate of ethnic Hungarians in Ukraine, to focus its efforts on influencing Russia to stop its aggression.

Controversial Statement from Budapest and the Position of the Armed Forces

Recently, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, Levente Madjar, reported that the Ukrainian ambassador was summoned to the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in connection with the death of a Transcarpathian of Hungarian descent, Josyp Shebeshteny. Madjar claimed that the man died after being beaten by representatives of the territorial recruitment center during forced mobilization. Similar versions were also voiced by some Hungarian media.

At the same time, the command of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine categorically rejected the accusations of violence. The Armed Forces emphasized that Shebeshteny was legally mobilized on June 14, 2025, after passing a medical commission, and on June 15 began training in one of the military units. According to official data, on June 18 he left his place of service without permission, and on June 24 he independently sought medical attention for acute stress reaction. Medical professionals found no physical injuries on him.

According to the conclusion of the forensic medical examination, the cause of Shebeshteny’s death on July 6, 2025, was pulmonary artery thromboembolism with no signs of violence. Ukrainian military officials emphasized that they are open to a transparent investigation of the circumstances of this case.

In Ukrainian society, reports of incidents between representatives of the Territorial Recruitment Center and citizens periodically arise, often becoming targets of information-psychological operations by Russia. Social media quickly spreads negative narratives regarding mobilization.

It should be noted that the Hungarian authorities have repeatedly demonstrated loyalty to the Kremlin and criticized Ukraine. In particular, in March, Hungarian Minister for EU Affairs Janos Boka suggested turning Ukraine into a “buffer zone” between Russia and the EU, while the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry emphasized that the security of our state is a component of European security.
