Corruption Scandal in the Energy Sector and the Position of Political Forces
On November 17, two opposition political forces — “Holos” and “European Solidarity” — called for the resignation of the current Cabinet of Ministers and the formation of a new parliamentary coalition. The reason for this was a large-scale investigation into corruption in the energy sector.
On November 10, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine reported the discovery of a criminal organization that systematically received illegal benefits from the contractors of the “Energoatom” company, amounting to 10–15% of the contract sums. According to the investigation, these funds were laundered through a back office in the center of Kyiv, through which approximately 100 million dollars passed. It is also noted that the premises of this office belonged to the family of former people’s deputy and now senator of the Russian Federation Andriy Derkach, who is involved in another criminal case by NABU and SAP.
The case involves, among others, former business partner of Volodymyr Zelensky from “Kvartal 95” Timur Mindich, who, according to law enforcement, has left the territory of Ukraine; former Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko, whose resignation was initiated by the government; as well as former Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Chernyshov. The investigation reports that suspicions have been announced against eight individuals, five of whom have been detained.
NABU detective Oleksandr Abakumov reported on air that during the investigation, detectives recorded the involvement of four ministers from the Cabinet of Ministers in various situations. According to him, these are officials who served at different times, so they are not all current ministers.
