Support for Ukraine’s Sovereignty
During the conversation, the unwavering support for Ukraine from the United Kingdom and Canada was discussed. The leaders stressed that Ukraine’s future must remain within the realm of freedom, independence, and the right to self-determination. They welcomed the international efforts to achieve peace, led by U.S. President Donald Trump, and agreed on the need to build peace together with Ukraine.
“They welcomed the continuation of international efforts, led by President Trump, aimed at establishing peace, and agreed that it needs to be built together with Ukraine, not imposed on it,” the statement said.
Negotiations for Peace Settlement
Keir Starmer and Mark Carney confirmed their intention to closely cooperate with U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the coming days. On August 8, Donald Trump announced a planned meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, scheduled for August 15 in Alaska, aimed at finding ways for a peaceful settlement between Ukraine and Russia.
On August 11, President Trump acknowledged the possibility of “some exchange of territories” between Ukraine and Russia, but expressed dissatisfaction with statements from Ukrainian leadership regarding the need for constitutional agreement on this matter.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Vladimir Putin told Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff that he was ready to agree to a complete ceasefire only on the condition that Ukrainian troops withdraw from the entire Donetsk region. Subsequently, The Washington Post reported that Putin does not intend to abandon claims to the occupied territories in the Kherson and Zaporizhia regions.
At the same time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine will not give up any of its territory to Russia. The Ukrainian and European leadership did not receive invitations to the summit in the U.S. in Alaska; however, the Trump administration continues to maintain contacts with allies. A group video conference initiated by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is scheduled for August 13, involving the leaders of Ukraine and European countries.
