Details of the Talks and Prospects for Cooperation

During the meeting, the parties discussed a wide range of issues, including deepening cooperation between Ukraine and Slovakia. Zelensky emphasized Ukraine’s openness to constructive dialogue and the desire to strengthen relations between the countries. They also agreed to prepare for a meeting of the intergovernmental commission in the near future and to exchange visits between Kyiv and Bratislava. Teams from both sides are already working on coordinating the schedule for future meetings.

“We discussed cooperation in various areas and the holding of government meetings in the format of an intergovernmental commission in the near future. We talked about exchanging visits to Kyiv and Bratislava – we agreed that the teams would work on the schedule,” he wrote in a telegram.

Slovakia’s Position on Ukraine’s Eurointegration

During the talks, special attention was paid to the issue of Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. Zelensky emphasized that Slovakia supports Ukraine’s Eurointegration aspirations and is ready to provide assistance on this path.

For its part, Fico’s press service announced a meeting with the President of Ukraine to discuss further negotiations between the governments and support for joint projects beneficial to both states. As of now, the Prime Minister of Slovakia has not commented on the details of the personal meeting.

Prior to this, on May 2, Zelensky and Fico had a phone conversation during which they discussed the possibility of exchanging visits. Zelensky invited the Prime Minister of Slovakia to Kyiv and also thanked him for the invitation to visit Bratislava. The President’s Office emphasized that the teams are working on organizing a personal meeting.

The previous meeting between Zelensky and Fico took place in September 2025 in Uzhhorod.

It is worth noting that Robert Fico is known for his closeness to the Kremlin, which causes tension in relations with Kyiv. Slovakia, along with Hungary, accused Ukraine of delaying the repair of the Druzhba oil pipeline after the suspension of oil pumping in January due to an attack by the Russian Federation, and also blocked the provision of assistance to Ukraine from the EU.

Despite the EU’s joint efforts to reduce imports of Russian energy resources following the onset of Russia’s full-scale aggression, Slovakia and Hungary remain dependent on supplies of Russian oil and gas and seek to preserve these energy resources.
