Zelensky and the President of Syria Discussed Military Cooperation and Food Supply

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held talks with Syrian leader Ahmad al-Sharaa on April 5. During the meeting in Damascus, the parties discussed ways to strengthen the security and development of both countries, as well as shared their visions for stabilizing the situation in the region.

Exchange of Security Experience and Support for Ukraine

During the negotiations, the presidents focused on the prospects for exchanging military and security experience. Zelensky thanked Syria for its support in countering Russian aggression and emphasized the importance of cooperation to strengthen the defense capabilities of both states.

“We agreed to work together to provide more security and opportunities for development for our societies. We discussed the situation in the region and the prospects for improving it. We also talked about the circumstances of Russia’s war against Ukraine, and I am grateful for the support. There is a strong interest in exchanging military and security experience. Thank you for your words of respect for our people”

Deepening Economic Cooperation and Food Security

The leaders paid special attention during the negotiations to the development of economic interaction. Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine is a “reliable supplier” of food products. The parties explored opportunities for joint efforts to strengthen food security throughout the region and discussed support for energy and infrastructure projects in Syria.

The President of Ukraine assured that Kyiv is ready to engage in initiatives that will help overcome modern challenges in Syria’s energy and infrastructure sectors, as well as promote the development of both states.

Zelensky highlighted the importance of active diplomacy for real security and economic interaction, noting that every nation and region deserves a peaceful life. Before his visit to Syria, the Ukrainian president visited Istanbul, where he held talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.
