Zelensky and Trump Discuss Strengthening Ukraine’s Defense Against Russian Attacks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced a phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump that took place on the evening of July 14. During the discussion, the parties paid special attention to issues related to enhancing the protection of Ukrainian citizens from Russian strikes and strengthening cooperation between the states.

Support for Ukraine and Security Issues

Zelensky thanked Trump for his willingness to support Ukraine and emphasized the importance of working together to end violence and achieve a lasting and just peace. In his address, the President of Ukraine stated:

“It was a very good conversation. Thank you for your willingness to support Ukraine and to continue working together to stop the killings and establish a lasting and just peace.”

During the conversation, Trump informed Zelensky about his meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, which took place at the White House. According to Zelensky, the parties discussed the importance of maintaining effective partnership relations, as well as increasing defense spending by NATO member countries.

Defense Cooperation and New Initiatives

The President of Ukraine mentioned that a key topic of the negotiations was practical steps to enhance the protection of the civilian population from Russian attacks. Zelensky emphasized the readiness for maximally productive cooperation to strengthen the country’s defense positions and achieve peace. The leaders agreed to coordinate their actions more frequently and maintain regular contact.

Zelensky specifically thanked the United States for their support and noted that Kyiv is currently working on concluding large-scale defense agreements with Washington, although the details remain confidential for now.

At the same time, according to the U.S. President, during his meeting with Mark Rutte, he announced the intention to provide Ukraine with weapons worth “billions of dollars,” which will be procured through NATO. Among other things, it is planned to transfer modern Patriot air defense systems to Kyiv, as previously stated by the U.S., Germany, and Norway.

At the time of publication, U.S. President Donald Trump had not publicly commented on the conversation with Zelensky.
