Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a series of negotiations with European leaders regarding the outcomes of his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Florida and analyzed the latest statements from the Russian Federation.
Discussion of Diplomatic Issues with European Partners
Zelensky informed German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs, and Finnish President Alexander Stubb about the key topics and outcomes of his dialogue with Trump. According to the president, special attention was given to the coordination with European partners and the discussion of Russia’s attempts to destabilize the diplomatic process through misinformation.
“I informed about the main highlights that were discussed and the key issues. Thank you, Friedrich (Merz), for your advice and ongoing coordination. Of course, we also discussed today’s Russian fake news, which Moscow is using to undermine diplomacy and justify prolonging the war,” he wrote in a Telegram message.
In a conversation with the Latvian president, Zelensky expressed gratitude for the continuous support and assistance Latvia has provided to Ukraine since 2022. He also shared details of his meeting with Donald Trump with Rinkēvičs and noted the productive cooperation with the American negotiating team.
With Alexander Stubb, the President of Finland, Zelensky discussed the current state of diplomatic relations, prospects for cooperation, and the results of the dialogue with the U.S.
Response to Russian Statements and the Progress of Negotiations with the U.S.
Zelensky emphasized the importance of joint efforts to counter misinformation from Russia, which spreads fake news to justify its attacks on Ukraine and prolong the war. The president also announced plans for new meetings in Europe aimed at strengthening international coordination.
Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused Ukraine of attacking Putin’s residence in Valdai and stated that Moscow would reconsider its position in the negotiations, labeling Ukraine’s actions as “state terrorism.” Lavrov noted that Russia had identified targets for corresponding strikes and the timing of their execution.
Volodymyr Zelensky called this statement another piece of misinformation, noting that Russia is trying to create a basis for new attacks, potentially against Kyiv. Such rhetoric emerged against the backdrop of ongoing negotiations between Ukraine and the U.S. regarding a peaceful resolution to the situation.
U.S. President Donald Trump, for his part, reported significant progress in the negotiations, noting that only one or two issues remain to be discussed. Zelensky stressed that the 20-point peace plan is agreed upon by 90%, while the security guarantees are fully confirmed.
Before meeting with the Ukrainian president, Trump held talks with Vladimir Putin, which, according to Trump, were “good and very productive.” As clarified by Putin’s aide Yuri Ushakov, both leaders agreed that a temporary ceasefire could only lead to prolonging the conflict, although Trump did not publicly make such statements.
After the dialogue with Zelensky, Trump reached out to Putin again, resulting in another conversation. Ushakov claims that Trump was shocked by the report of an attack on one of Putin’s state residences; however, there was no official reaction from the U.S. president to these statements.
