The negotiation process aimed at ending the war between Ukraine and the Russian Federation, mediated by the USA, has been temporarily suspended due to the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East. This was announced by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, in his address on the evening of March 4.

According to the head of state, Ukrainian officials continue to maintain regular dialogue with representatives of the United States. At the same time, the resumption of the trilateral negotiation format is currently complicated by the security situation in the region.
“Right now, due to the situation surrounding Iran, there are no necessary signals for a trilateral meeting. However, as soon as the security situation and the overall political context allow for the continuation of that specific trilateral diplomatic work, it will be done. Ukraine is ready for this.”
Trilateral Talks: History and Prospects
Since the beginning of 2026, the parties have already held several rounds of trilateral negotiations. In particular, delegations met in Abu Dhabi in January and early February, and negotiations took place in Geneva in mid-February. It was planned that the next round of meetings would take place in early March again in Abu Dhabi.
However, agreements for the next meeting were reached before the intensification of hostilities in the Middle East. Since February 28, Israeli and American forces have been striking targets in Iran. In response, Tehran is attacking Israeli targets, as well as U.S. facilities and diplomatic missions in the Gulf countries. This escalation has been the main reason for the temporary suspension of trilateral negotiations between Ukraine, Russia, and the United States.
