Zelensky Expresses Concern Over Decreased Support for Ukraine Due to War in Iran

ППО, миротворці та виробництво зброї в Україні: Зеленський анонсував теми «Рамштайну»

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized his concern that the protracted armed conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran could further weaken support for Ukraine from the United States. He made this statement during an interview in Istanbul.

Reduction in Weapon Supplies and Impact on Defense Capability

Zelensky particularly highlighted the importance of American Patriot missile defense systems for protection against Russian ballistic missiles. He noted that Ukraine has not yet received the necessary number of these systems, and there are currently no alternatives for effective missile interception.

“We must acknowledge that we are not a priority today,” Zelensky said. “That is why I fear that the prolonged (Iranian) war will give us less support”

The President of Ukraine pointed out that the shortage of Patriots could be exacerbated by the prolonged conflict in the Middle East, as resources from the U.S. and their European partners are limited and being redirected elsewhere. According to him, if the situation does not change, the volume of aid to Ukraine may decrease daily.

Global Consequences of the War in Iran and Western Countries’ Response

Ukraine had hoped for support from European allies to procure Patriot systems; however, due to limited production in the U.S. and supply shortages, resources remain insufficient. The war in Iran, now in its sixth week, has a significant impact on the global economy and the security situation in the region. This further complicates logistics and meeting Ukraine’s defense needs, making Ukrainian cities more vulnerable to Russian attacks.

Last month, the U.S. President appealed to NATO for assistance in restoring operations in the Strait of Hormuz, but European leaders responded with refusal, citing the impossibility due to the ongoing conflict and that it is “not their war.”

According to the Financial Times, Donald Trump threatened to halt arms supplies under the PURL initiative, which is funded by European countries to support Ukraine. In March, U.S. President Donald Trump acknowledged that the United States is often forced to redirect arms supplies between different regions, confirming the risk of reduced defense assistance to Ukraine due to the escalation of the situation in the Middle East.
