During an official visit to Nicosia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides. The conversation took place against the backdrop of Cyprus beginning its presidency in the Council of the European Union.

Support for Ukraine and European Integration

Volodymyr Zelensky thanked Cyprus for its consistent humanitarian support for Ukraine during the war and Russian attacks.

“Thank you for your support, especially for the humanitarian assistance during this war and the Russian attacks,” said Volodymyr Zelensky to his Cypriot counterpart.

During the talks, the leaders paid special attention to supporting Ukraine’s Euro-integration course during Cyprus’s presidency in the EU Council. They discussed the urgent opening of negotiation clusters to accelerate Ukraine’s accession process to the European Union. President Zelensky emphasized the importance of achieving real progress and making decisions that would facilitate further rapprochement with the EU over the next six months.

Sanctions Against the Russian Federation and International Coalition

The participation of Cyprus in the “Coalition of the Willing” – an international initiative in support of Ukraine – was specifically noted. The parties discussed the diplomatic situation and efforts in collaboration with American and European partners to achieve a just peace. Special attention was given to enhancing sanctions against the Russian Federation, particularly the introduction of additional restrictions on the Russian shadow fleet and the preparation of proposals for the 20th package of EU sanctions.

As part of his visit to Nicosia, Volodymyr Zelensky also had scheduled meetings with the Archbishop, the President of the European Council, and the President of the European Commission.

It is worth noting that the President of Cyprus visited Kyiv in December. At that time, he emphasized that Ukraine’s security is intrinsically linked to the security of the entire European Union.
