New Sanctions: Who is Affected
According to information from the ministry, the new sanctions target 13 individuals and 11 organizations, including those involved in the development and implementation of drone technologies for the Russian military. Also on the sanctions list are companies that support the cyber infrastructure for Russia’s hybrid operations against Ukraine, as well as enterprises related to the production of liquefied natural gas.
Canada has placed special emphasis on combating Russia’s revenue from energy resources that are used to finance aggression. For the first time, organizations facilitating cybercriminal operations and companies from the energy sector have been included in the sanctions list.
Shadow Fleet and International Coordination
An important component of the package is the sanctions against 100 vessels from Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet,” which are used to circumvent international restrictions and transport energy resources. This step is intended to strengthen control over the logistics of supplying Russian energy resources and complicate the financing of the war against Ukraine.
“Canada remains a leader in combating the military technologies that Russia relies on in its efforts to gain an advantage on the battlefield against Ukraine,” the department states.
Canada’s sanctions are fully aligned with the recent actions of the United States, the European Union, and the United Kingdom. This is part of the overall policy of increasing economic pressure by the G7 to compel Russia to cease hostilities on Ukrainian territory. Minister Anand emphasized that Canada will continue to coordinate its actions with international partners until Russia’s invasion is fully concluded.
It should be noted that on November 11 and 12, a meeting of the G7 foreign ministers is taking place in Canada, which includes the head of Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry, Andrii Sybiha.
