Tihanovskaya in Kyiv: Ukraine Should See a Free Belarus as a Partner

важливо, щоб Україна бачила у вільній Білорусі майбутнього партнера, а не загрозу

Leader of the Belarusian opposition Sviatlana Tihanovskaya during her visit to Kyiv emphasized the importance of Ukraine perceiving a free Belarus not as a threat, but as a reliable partner and neighbor. She stressed that only a democratic Belarus will become a source of stability and security in the region, rather than a tool for the aggressive policies of the Kremlin.

Cooperation between Ukraine and Belarusian Democratic Forces

During a joint press conference with Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha, Tihanovskaya spoke about the results of negotiations regarding further cooperation between Ukraine and the democratic forces of Belarus. She noted the appointment of Yaroslav Chornogor as ambassador for special assignments, emphasizing that this will facilitate dialogue and help address practical issues faced by Belarusians in Ukraine.

“Today we discussed further cooperation between Ukraine and the democratic forces of Belarus. It is very important for us that Ukraine sees a free Belarus as a future partner and neighbor, not a threat. Only a free, democratic Belarus will be a factor of stability and security in the region, rather than a tool for the aggressive policies of the Kremlin,” she stated in Kyiv at a joint press conference with Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha.

Tihanovskaya emphasized that today Ukraine is fighting not only for its own independence but also for the right of nations to free themselves from the empire’s dictate. She also expressed confidence that a Ukrainian victory will open the path to freedom for Belarus and called for not easing European sanctions against Lukashenko’s regime.

Support for Belarusians in Ukraine and the Position of the Ukrainian Authorities

Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha assured that Ukraine clearly distinguishes between the Belarusian regime that has dragged the country into Russian aggression and the Belarusian people. He highlighted the contribution of Belarusian volunteers, journalists, human rights defenders, and activists in the common struggle for freedom, noting that more than 90 citizens of Belarus have given their lives defending Ukraine from imperial Russia.

Sybiha also reported that to develop cooperation with the democratic forces of Belarus, an ambassador for special assignments, Yaroslav Chornogor, has been appointed within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. Tihanovskaya, for her part, emphasized that her visit to Kyiv is historic and aimed at addressing the issues of Belarusians living and fighting in Ukraine, as well as deepening dialogue with the Ukrainian authorities.
