Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that the old model of close economic and security cooperation with the US has come to an end. According to him, the country can no longer view the US as a reliable partner.

At a press conference in Ottawa, Carney noted:
“I reject any attempts to undermine Canada”
. He also announced that Canada is preparing tough trade measures in response to the US’s 25 percent tariffs on imported cars, which will take effect at the beginning of April.
Reorienting to New Markets
Amid the escalation of the trade war, Carney emphasized that Canada must “significantly reduce its dependence on the US”. He stressed the need to reassess the security and trade agreement with Washington and find opportunities to pivot to other markets.
Trump’s Statement and New Challenges
Carney also mentioned that Donald Trump reached out with a proposal for a phone call, during which he plans to remind the American leader of the importance of “cooperation and respect for sovereignty” for the partnership.
“It is clear that the US is no longer a reliable partner. Perhaps through comprehensive negotiations, we can restore an element of trust”
, he added.
It is worth noting that the US president previously hinted at the possibility of annexing Canada as the 51st state, which has raised additional concerns in Ottawa. Trump also remarked that if Canada and the EU agree, even stricter tariffs could be imposed against the US.
