European Leaders Consider Purchasing American Weapons for Ukraine

європейські лідери розглядають варіант купівлі американської зброї для України

European leaders are actively seeking ways to strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities as diplomatic and military means to counter Russian aggression face new challenges. According to Bloomberg, one possible option is the procurement of American weapon systems for Ukraine, as Europe lacks sufficient stockpiles and production capabilities.

Current Situation with Arms Supply and Political Course

According to sources, the European Union and individual countries are not receiving commitments from the U.S. to continue arms supplies. The White House has also rejected calls from Europe to increase pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to force an end to the war through intensified sanctions. This approach complicates the possibility of rapid and large-scale assistance to Ukraine.

As reported by Bloomberg, the Kremlin is likely preparing for a summer offensive and is stalling on peace negotiations that were promised to Trump. According to sources, the proposal to purchase more American weapon systems and send them to Ukraine is gaining increasing trust among political circles. This, they say, would allow Ukraine to hold back the advance of Russian troops and exert pressure on Putin.

“Purchasing American weapons would help Ukraine hold back the advance of the Russian army and exert pressure on Putin,” Bloomberg reports.

U.S. Assistance to Ukraine Since the Start of the War

Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine until the end of 2024, the United States has provided Kyiv with approximately $123 billion in financial, humanitarian, and military assistance, the largest amount of aid among other countries. Several aid tranches have been announced, including the latest of $500 million, which was approved on January 9. This assistance included the transfer of weapons from U.S. Army stockpiles under the Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA).

Currently, the Trump administration has not announced new aid packages for Ukraine, focusing instead on diplomatic contacts with Kyiv and Moscow to seek ways to end the war, complicating the process of rapid arms supply.
