“We are also prepared to acquire additional Patriot systems from the US to provide them to Ukraine,” Merz said.

Negotiations Ongoing, No Final Agreements

The German Chancellor clarified that he reached out to US President Donald Trump last week with a request for the transfer of Patriot systems. According to Merz, the American side also has a need for these systems, although there are enough of them in the US. A final decision regarding the future supply has not yet been reached.

Friedrich Merz stressed that Germany’s support for Ukraine remains unwavering, especially in light of the increasing threat from Russian shelling.

Trilateral Negotiations and the US Position

Recently, US President Donald Trump announced that Washington is considering the possibility of transferring a Patriot system to Ukraine. According to sources, after the US temporarily suspended arms supplies to Kyiv, Friedrich Merz called Donald Trump to request the resumption of missile supplies for the Patriot systems. Merz also noted that Germany is ready to purchase these systems from the US for subsequent transfer to Ukraine.

In response, President Trump offered Berlin to sell one of its own Patriot systems, which are already in service with the German army, to Ukraine. Sources report that the parties have not reached a final agreement, but negotiations are ongoing.

Amidst the intensification of Russian air attacks on Ukrainian cities, particularly Kyiv, the Ukrainian government is continuously appealing to Western partners to increase the supply of air defense systems. During the final press conference of the NATO summit in The Hague last week, Donald Trump confirmed that the US would consider the possibility of selling additional Patriot systems to Ukraine.
