The Role of Patriot Systems in Defending Ukraine
Ruben Brekelmans emphasized that the package includes American weapon systems as well as the necessary parts and missiles for the Patriot. According to the minister, this assistance aims to strengthen Ukraine’s defense and ensure the security of all of Europe against Russian aggression.
“The Netherlands will provide a package of American weapon systems worth 500 million euros (including parts and Patriot missiles). This will help Ukraine protect itself and the rest of Europe from Russian aggression.”
Brekelmans previously announced that the Netherlands would make a significant contribution to the supply of American Patriot systems, emphasizing the importance of strengthening Ukraine’s air defense.
Support from Allies and Ukraine’s Urgent Needs
On July 14, U.S. President Donald Trump, during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, stated that he plans to provide Ukraine with weapons worth “billions of dollars,” which NATO will procure. Among the priority military equipment, Trump highlighted the Patriot air defense systems.
The need for these systems is also confirmed by Ukrainian officials. Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov, along with the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, emphasized during a meeting in the “Ramstein” format on July 21 that the most critical need for the Ukrainian army remains modern air defense systems and ammunition for them.
