Queen of the Netherlands Gifts a Bell Made from Russian Weapons to the Czech Republic in Support of Ukraine

Королева Нідерландів на знак солідарності з Україною подарувала Чехії дзвін, виготовлений із російської зброї

On June 5, Queen Maxima of the Netherlands presented the Freedom Bell to the Czech Republic as a symbol of support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression. The unique bell was made from fragments of Russian artillery shells and other weapons used by Russia during the war against Ukraine. The bell was cast by a royal bell foundry known for its craftsmanship traditions.

Freedom Bell: A Symbol of Peace and Solidarity

The new Freedom Bell will be installed in the tower of the Church of the Holy Savior in Prague. It will replace the original bell that was requisitioned by the Austro-Hungarian army during World War I for melting down for military purposes. Thus, the bell will not only serve as a reminder of past losses but will also become a modern symbol of transforming instruments of war into a sign of peace.

“This bell has a lot of symbolism, and it is a very special project for us. To use material intended for violence and transform it into something peaceful is a beautiful idea,” said Joost Eijsbouts, the owner of the bell foundry, to Czech public radio.

Attendance of Distinguished Guests and the Significance of the Event

The ceremonial handover of the bell was attended by Czech President Petr Pavel and his wife Eva. This event was one of the highlights during the official visit of the Dutch royal couple to Prague. However, King Willem-Alexander had to cut his trip short and return home on June 4 due to a political crisis in the Netherlands.

The Czech Republic and the Netherlands have consistently supported Ukraine by providing political and humanitarian aid amid the Russian invasion. The gift made from enemy weapons underscores European solidarity and the desire for peace.
