Consequences of the Strike on Sofia Cathedral
As a result of the powerful shockwave, the cornice on the main apse of Sofia Cathedral was destroyed. This temple, built in the 11th century and listed as a national monument, is an important symbol of Ukrainian statehood and spirituality.
“Last night, the enemy struck again at the very heart of our identity. Sofia Cathedral in Kyiv has been damaged — a sanctuary that has withstood centuries and symbolizes the birth of our statehood. The shockwave caused the destruction of the cornice on the main apse of this national heritage site. This 11th-century temple is the soul of all Ukraine,” wrote Minister of Culture and Strategic Communications Mykola Tochitsky on Facebook.
Damage to Cultural Heritage
According to Minister of Culture and Strategic Communications Mykola Tochitsky, the Odesa Film Studio, where numerous iconic Ukrainian films were created, was also affected last night. The attack damaged pavilions, storage facilities, sets, and vehicles. The sets for the film “Dovzhenko,” which was to be a national project dedicated to the outstanding Ukrainian filmmaker, were completely destroyed.
Mykola Tochitsky emphasized that Russia is waging not only a war against cities but is also trying to destroy Ukrainian culture, memory, and future.
