Increased Threat to Sumy
According to Sybiga, on the night of October 8, Russian military forces attacked a residential building in Sumy. As a result, a family was affected, including a four-year-old girl who was hospitalized with severe burns. The Foreign Minister stressed that residents of the region are under constant threat due to regular shelling.
“The Sumy region is under constant Russian terror. I urge international partners to strengthen support for the communities in the region and to bolster their resilience in such difficult conditions,” stated the Foreign Minister.
Consequences of Shelling and Response
In recent weeks, the situation in the region has remained tense. According to local authorities, Russian drones and other weapons have repeatedly struck residential buildings, particularly in the Krasnopill community. Due to the strikes on the night of October 2, parts of the Konotop and Shostka districts were left without electricity, but by October 7, gas supply was restored in Shostka.
Russia systematically employs a wide arsenal of weapons—from strike drones to missiles, aerial bombs, and multiple launch rocket systems—to attack Ukrainian territories. Despite this, the leadership of the Russian Federation publicly denies targeted attacks on civilian objects, although incidents of shelling hospitals, schools, kindergartens, and energy and water supply facilities are widely documented.
The Ukrainian authorities, along with international organizations, classify these strikes as war crimes of the Russian Federation and emphasize their deliberate nature.
