“Ukraine is ready for this, and there is currently no clear public response from Russia. So, the near future should show what the consequences will be if Russia continues to prolong the war and disrupt constructive efforts,” the president noted.
Efforts of European Leaders for Peace
Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine and France share a common vision of the need to form a European approach to security. The leaders stressed the importance of effective work at both the advisor level and the level of heads of state. They also agreed to discuss the outcomes of their conversations with other European leaders.
Emmanuel Macron has not yet made any official statements following his conversation with Zelensky.
On that day, Zelensky also announced numerous phone calls with the leaders of Germany, France, and Italy aimed at advancing a real peace process.
Negotiations Between the USA, Russia, and Ukraine
On August 6, a meeting took place in Moscow between the U.S. President’s Special Representative Steve Witkoff and Russian President Vladimir Putin. This dialogue occurred on the eve of the expiration of the ultimatum from U.S. President Donald Trump, who demanded that Russia reach a ceasefire with Ukraine by August 8. Otherwise, Trump promised to impose 100% tariffs on imports of Russian goods to the U.S. and goods from Russia’s partner countries.
After the negotiations, Trump announced “significant progress,” but acknowledged that these talks did not lead to a breakthrough. He also informed reporters at the White House about the “high likelihood” of his meeting with the presidents of Ukraine and Russia in the near future.
The Kremlin confirmed the possibility of such a meeting between Trump and Putin, and Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov stated that the possibility of a trilateral meeting involving Zelensky was discussed during the negotiations in Moscow. However, the Russian side refrained from any comments on this matter.
After his conversation with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, the President of Ukraine noted that Kyiv is ready for negotiations in various formats to achieve peace.
Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine is not afraid of meetings and expects the same readiness from Russia, urging an end to the war.
Meanwhile, analysts from the American Institute for the Study of War note that the Kremlin has not abandoned its intentions to subjugate Ukraine and is dragging out the negotiation process to buy time for further military actions and to gain concessions from Ukraine and the West.
