“Moscow is ready to provide Kyiv with a draft document on the conditions for reaching an agreement to resolve the war immediately after the completion of the exchange of prisoners of war.”
Ukraine and Russia have already conducted a large-scale exchange of prisoners of war and civilians. Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov reported that new exchanges are expected under the Istanbul agreements, which will last several days, offering hope for a gradual de-escalation process.
International Efforts and Leaders’ Positions
On May 19, US President Donald Trump held separate phone conversations with Russian leader Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Following these talks, Trump stated that negotiations to end the war would begin immediately. During the conversation with Trump, Putin emphasized that Russia and Ukraine must find compromises that satisfy both sides and expressed readiness to cooperate on a memorandum for a future peace treaty.
For his part, Zelensky stressed that Ukraine is ready for any negotiation format that yields results. At the same time, he warned that if Russia continues to propose unrealistic conditions, it will lead to serious consequences.
Overall, so far, Russia has shown no signs of readiness for substantial compromises and continues to reaffirm its positions, which the Ukrainian side considers unacceptable.
