The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine expressed disagreement with the decision of the Polish Sejm, which designated July 11 as a Day of Remembrance for Poles, “victims of the genocide committed by OUN and UPA in the eastern territories of the Second Polish Republic.” The Foreign Ministry’s statement emphasizes that such a step contradicts the spirit of good neighborly relations between Ukraine and Poland.

Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Advocates for Dialogue and Historical Justice
The Ukrainian foreign policy agency stresses that such unilateral decisions do not contribute to achieving mutual understanding and reconciliation, which both countries have been working on for a long time within the framework of the Joint Ukrainian-Polish Group for Historical Dialogue. The ministry believes that historical issues should be studied objectively and impartially, involving scholars rather than making political assessments.
“Ukraine consistently advocates for scientific, unbiased examination of the complex pages of our shared history. We are convinced that the path to true reconciliation lies through dialogue, mutual respect, and collaborative work by historians, rather than through political unilateral assessments,” the statement reads.
Kyiv’s Call to Poland to Preserve Partnership
Kyiv urges the Polish side to refrain from decisions that could lead to increased tensions in relations and undermine the achievements made through constructive dialogue and cooperation. The Foreign Ministry emphasized that, despite the “bias and political context of the Polish Sejm’s resolution,” Ukraine continues to work on organizing search and exhumation studies in the territories of both states.
Ukrainian diplomats also highlighted the importance of avoiding the search for enemies among the representatives of both nations, stressing the common opposition to the Russian Federation.
On June 4, 2025, the Polish Sejm passed a law establishing July 11 as the National Day of Remembrance for Poles who became victims of events in the eastern territories of the Second Polish Republic from 1939 to 1946.
