The United States Ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, announced expectations of “important announcements” regarding Ukraine during the upcoming meeting of NATO defense ministers, scheduled for October 15. According to him, the PURL program is already demonstrating high effectiveness in strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
PURL Program: Features and Results
Under the PURL program (Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List), which was launched on July 14, NATO coordinates the process of transferring American weapons to Ukraine funded by European countries. Whitaker noted that “we have created something that did not exist a few months ago, and we have transported weapons, materials, and ammunition to Ukraine, to the front lines. Now it operates smoothly and effectively… Thanks to PURL, President Trump has enabled our European NATO allies, as well as Canada, to purchase the best American weapons and ammunition in the world and transfer them to Ukraine.”
“For Ukraine to have everything it needs for self-defense, the quickest and most specific way to help our allies is to invest in PURL. This program is vital, and allies must step up and contribute now to pressure Russia to come to the negotiating table and agree to peace,” asserts the US Ambassador to NATO.
Contribution of European Countries and Prospects for Ukraine
The PURL program has already raised over 2 billion euros in the initial months of its implementation. This funding is used to purchase weapons and ammunition, including air defense systems that are not produced in European countries. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed that most of the funds raised are directed towards acquiring critically important weapons for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
At the same time, the US Ambassador to NATO criticized some European states for not participating actively enough in the program, thereby reducing the effectiveness of the collective support for Ukraine.
New decisions are expected to be announced at the NATO defense ministers meeting on October 15, which will further strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities and contribute to countering the aggression of the Russian Federation.
