French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barro criticized the announcement of an Easter truce in Ukraine by Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling it a “marketing operation.” According to him, it was a move aimed at appeasing U.S. leader Donald Trump and reducing tensions by establishing a positive image in the world.

“The Easter truce, which he somewhat unexpectedly announced, was a marketing operation, a charm offensive aimed at preventing President Trump’s impatience and anger”
While diplomatic negotiations were taking place, consultations involving Ukraine, the U.S., France, Britain, and Germany were held in Paris on April 17 to explore ways to end the war in Ukraine. Following this meeting, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the administration might suspend negotiations if substantial progress on key issues was not achieved within a few weeks.
On April 19, the Kremlin unexpectedly announced the “Easter truce,” which was quickly perceived as a tactical move. Ukraine and Russia exchanged accusations of violating agreements. At the same time, a report from the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) noted that satellite data indicated possible military activity along the front on April 20; however, it has not yet been possible to independently confirm any violations.
Current Status and Prospects of the Truce
Analysts emphasize that for a lasting and effective ceasefire, reliable monitoring mechanisms need to be established, and clear conditions and timelines must be defined. They warn that the Kremlin may use vague ceasefire agreements to conceal its refusal to accept proposals for ending it, as well as to accuse Ukraine of violations. This complicates the search for sustainable peace and requires more calculated diplomatic steps.
