This summer, the administration of Kyiv Zoo shared how they care for the comfort of their animals during periods of high temperatures. The zoo features a modern water system that encompasses 10 lakes and ponds, 32 fountains, 23 electric waterers, 21 water features, 33 aqua spinners, 25 pools, and 58 misters. This infrastructure ensures that all residents have constant access to coolness and clean water.
Water Activities and Comfort on Hot Days
On hot days, animals eagerly enjoy showers, swim in pools, and relax by the fountains. Ostriches, the elephant Horace, and turtles particularly love these activities. Individual solutions have been provided for each species: a spacious pool has been set up for the elephant, while miniature fountains and misters are available for smaller residents.
“The hot summer period is always a challenge for the zoo keepers. Even on the hottest day, each animal must be in comfortable conditions, which primarily means constant access to clean drinking water and humidifiers, pools, and ponds. And although this summer the weather has blessed us with periodic heavy rains – we are always prepared for dry spells,” assured the staff at Kyiv Zoo.
Shade and Safety for All Residents
In addition to water activities, the zoo has also ensured there is plenty of shade. More than 50 various shade structures have been installed for the animals’ rest: from small sun umbrellas for turtles to a large fabric pergola for the elephant Horace. This allows each resident to find a cozy spot for midday rest and avoid overheating.
Thanks to a comprehensive approach to organizing the space and constant monitoring of living conditions, the animals at Kyiv Zoo feel comfortable even on the hottest days of July.
