Details of the Bill

If the bill is passed, individuals suspected of posing a threat to national security could be deported from the country within 72 hours without prior notice of the investigation’s commencement. Fidesz MP János Halász submitted the draft law «On Amendments to the Laws Regarding the Suspension of Hungarian Citizenship».

According to this initiative, citizenship may be suspended for up to 10 years for individuals who hold citizenship from countries outside the European Economic Area and are considered a threat to public order or national security. Grounds for suspension include service in foreign armies, participation in activities benefiting foreign governments or terrorist organizations, as well as convictions for crimes against humanity or treason.

Procedure for Initiating Suspension

Any individual can initiate the suspension of citizenship by submitting a relevant notification to the authorities. Following the decision, the individual is subject to deportation, even if they appeal the decision within 30 days; judicial proceedings may occur after their deportation.

On March 15, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stated the need for a «spring cleaning» against those allegedly acting against Hungarian sovereignty.

Under Viktor Orbán’s leadership and Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, Hungary has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to Russia. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Budapest has made statements that contradict the EU’s overall position on supporting Ukraine.
