International Support for Moldova

During the conversation, Zelensky emphasized the importance of the election results for the stability of Moldova and Europe. He highlighted that attempts by Russia to destabilize the situation had failed, and Moldova had demonstrated its resilience against external threats.

“These elections showed that Russian destabilization efforts are losing, while Moldova is winning in Europe. Russian subversive activities and constant misinformation—none of this worked. It is important that Moldova has been effective in defending against threats alongside all those who helped.”

According to Zelensky, Ukraine is ready to continue supporting Moldova and collaborating to strengthen the security, economy, and social development of both countries.

Reactions from Diplomats and EU Leaders

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha called the election results a “great day” for Moldova and Europe. He also congratulated Moldovan Foreign Minister Mihai Popșoi and emphasized that Ukraine and Moldova will continue to work together towards full membership in the European Union.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen noted that attempts to sow discord did not affect the determination of the Moldovan citizens who chose the path towards Europe, democracy, and freedom. She emphasized that the doors of the EU remain open for Moldova, and Brussels will support the country on its path to reforms.

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell underscored that the victory of the pro-European party occurred despite extensive Russian efforts to create misinformation and attempts to buy votes.

According to the Central Electoral Commission of Moldova, PAS received about half of the votes in the parliamentary elections held on September 28. The “Patriotic Bloc,” which is considered pro-Russian, came in second. In total, over 1.5 million citizens participated in the elections amid numerous reports of Russian interference in the electoral process, which the Kremlin traditionally denies.

These elections are considered a key milestone for Moldova’s future, which has been a candidate country for EU membership for several years. The Party of Action and Solidarity, led by Maia Sandu, has maintained a parliamentary majority since 2021.
