Ecological Value of the Teremky Natural Area

The “Teremky” natural area is a unique natural territory in Kyiv, where remnants of ancient oak-hornbeam forests have been preserved. Rare plant species listed in the Red Book of Ukraine grow here, and it serves as a migration “green corridor” for many species of birds and small mammals. For local residents, this area is an important public space that supports physical and mental well-being without leaving the city limits.

Threat of Destruction of the Natural Zone and Community Demands

Currently, the natural area is under real threat of destruction. This concerns a land plot of 5.6901 hectares, which is used by the I.I. Schmalhausen Institute of Zoology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. According to the petition initiators, the leadership of the Institute and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, despite the designated purpose of the plot for scientific research, plans to transfer it for the construction of multi-apartment residential buildings in collaboration with the company “YUG-PROJECT.” It is known that five 30-story buildings are planned to be erected on the site, which would completely destroy the natural environment of this part of the natural area.

“For the residents of the district, the natural area is an invaluable public space where one can restore energy, breathe clean air, and maintain mental health without leaving the city limits.”

In light of the situation, local residents are demanding that the city authorities immediately halt any attempts to change the designated purpose of the land plot, prohibit any construction in this area, and grant it environmental protection status as part of the “Teremky” natural area to ensure the preservation and protection of the city’s natural heritage.
