Kyiv Students Successfully Launched Their First Solid-Fuel Rockets

Київські студенти запустили дві ракети

The team from the student design bureau NAURocket at the Kyiv Aviation Institute conducted the first launches of two amateur rockets, marking an important milestone in the development of Ukrainian rocketry. These launches are the result of years of work and a revival of interest in amateur space and rocket sports in the country.

About the Launch and Technical Features of the Rockets

The two rockets, named Deimos and Phobos, are unguided devices approximately two meters long, powered by solid sorbitol (caramel) fuel. Their creation involved three groups of specialists: electronics programmers, design engineers, and those responsible for the engines. The main goal of the launches was to achieve an altitude of 700 to 1000 meters on a vertical trajectory, to test the parachute system at apogee, and to evaluate the GPS beacon for locating the rockets after landing.

“Although neither rocket was able to reach the planned trajectory due to strong winds, the telemetry and onboard systems functioned properly”

The launches took place at a special testing site under military supervision. According to experts, the main success can be considered the very fact of the rockets’ liftoff and the preservation of the launch installations’ integrity even in challenging weather conditions. Although the rockets did not reach the planned altitude due to strong winds, the systems operated correctly, and the telemetry provided important data for analysis.

Future Plans and Development Prospects

Over the next three years, the NAURocket team intends to master the technologies for creating guided rockets with navigation systems and automatic control systems. This will enable Ukrainian students and engineers to enhance their skills and make a significant contribution to the development of amateur rocketry in Ukraine.
