Conditions and Duration of the Guarantees

According to Zelensky, the teams from both countries reached a final agreement on the security guarantees. According to the approved documents, these guarantees are provided for 15 years with the possibility of further extension. The president emphasized that Ukraine is interested in a longer duration of the agreement, considering the protracted nature of the war with Russia, which has been ongoing for nearly 15 years since the start of aggression in 2014.

“We discussed this with the teams, and yesterday we confirmed it with the U.S. president, that we will have strong security guarantees from the United States. Indeed, this is not forever. The documents specify 15 years with the possibility of extending these security guarantees,” he said.

Prospects for Extension and Trump’s Reaction

During the negotiations, Zelensky proposed to Trump to consider the possibility of extending the guarantees to 30, 40, or even 50 years, which he believes would be a historic decision for the American president. Donald Trump responded that he would consider such an initiative.

After the negotiations concluded, Zelensky reported that the parties had fully agreed on the security guarantees between Ukraine and the U.S. Donald Trump noted that the agreement stands at 95%, but emphasized significant progress and nearing a final decision. According to Trump, only one or two complex issues remain to be resolved, but overall the negotiations are progressing successfully.

Before the meeting in Florida began, Trump announced the final stage of the negotiation process, emphasizing the absence of clear deadlines. Zelensky added that the negotiating teams from both countries made every effort to achieve results and expressed hope that the prepared documents would lead to real changes in the security sector.
